What is the Baron EQ Test?
The Baron EQ test is based on the work of psychologist Reuven Bar-On, who coined the term emotional quotient (EQ) in 1985 and published the first standardized emotional-intelligence questionnaire (EQ-i) in 1997. Unlike IQ tests that measure reasoning ability, EQ measures how well you understand, express and manage emotions - your own and other people's.
This online version contains 50 statements answered on a three-point scale (Always / Sometimes / Never). There are no right or wrong answers - just answer honestly how it usually feels for you.
The five dimensions it measures
- Emotional Self-Awareness - recognizing and understanding your own emotions
- Emotion Regulation - managing and controlling your emotional reactions
- Self-Motivation - staying driven, persistent and optimistic toward goals
- Empathy - perceiving and understanding how others feel
- Relationship Management - building and maintaining healthy relationships
How is it scored?
Each dimension contains 10 questions scored 0, 1 or 2 (with reverse-scored items to catch careless answering), giving 0-20 points per dimension and a total EQ index out of 100:
- 81-100: Higher EQ - emotionally stable, optimistic, strong social adaptation
- 41-80: Average EQ - the typical range, with clear strengths and growth areas
- 0-40: Lower EQ - more emotional fluctuation; targeted practice helps
Your result includes a per-dimension profile, your strongest area, your focus area, and a practical tip for improving the dimension where you score lowest.
Tips before you start
- Answer based on how you usually are, not how you would like to be.
- Don't overthink - the first honest answer is the most accurate one.
- It takes about 8-10 minutes. Find a quiet moment and answer in one sitting.
Is this test free?
Yes - 100% free, no sign-up, and your answers never leave your browser. This online adaptation is for self-exploration only and is not a substitute for a professionally administered psychological assessment.
