What is the Combined Raven's Test (CRT)?
The Combined Raven's Test (CRT) is a nonverbal intelligence assessment built on the Raven's Progressive Matrices tradition. Instead of relying on language, reading, or learned knowledge, it measures general cognitive ability through visual pattern reasoning: every question shows a grid of figures with one piece missing, and you choose the option that completes the pattern.
Because the entire test is language-free, it is one of the most culturally fair IQ assessments available, and it is suitable for a wide age range - roughly 7 to 55 years old.
Test structure: six sets, 72 questions
The CRT combines and extends the classic Raven's format into six sets of twelve questions each. The tasks become progressively more demanding:
- Set A - Perceptual discrimination: recognizing continuity of patterns
- Set AB - Similarity matching: spotting the shared feature between figures
- Set B - Comparative reasoning: "A is to B as C is to ?" visual analogies
- Set C - Serial relationships: patterns that evolve across rows and columns
- Set D - Pattern progression: rotation, movement, and step-by-step change
- Set E - Abstract reasoning: multiple rules changing at once
Sets A through AB each offer six answer options, while sets B through E offer eight, making the later questions noticeably harder to guess.
How is it scored?
Each correct answer earns one raw point, for a maximum of 72. Your raw score is converted to an IQ-style standard score (mean 100, standard deviation 15) and a percentile showing how your result compares with the general population. You also receive a per-set breakdown highlighting which reasoning skills are your strongest and which could use training.
There is no hard time limit, but most people finish within 30 to 50 minutes. You can revisit any question before submitting, and unanswered questions are scored as incorrect.
Tips before you start
- Find a quiet place where you will not be interrupted for about half an hour.
- Work quickly but carefully - accuracy matters more than speed.
- If a question feels impossible, make your best choice and move on; you can return later.
- Avoid overthinking: in matrix puzzles, the most consistent rule is usually the correct one.
