What is N-Back?

N-Back is a scientifically validated cognitive training task, first proposed by psychologist Wayne Kirchner in 1958. It is one of the most studied brain training exercises for improving working memory and fluid intelligence. A series of images flashes on screen one by one - your job is to remember what appeared N images ago.

How to Play

  1. Pick a difficulty level from 1-back to 8-back

  2. A sequence of images flashes on the screen one by one - memorize their order

  3. After each new image, select which image appeared N images before it from 4 candidates

  4. Each round has 20 questions - wrong answers do not end the game

  5. Your score is the number of correct answers out of 20

Difficulty Levels

  • 1-Back: Was the current image the same as the previous one - a gentle warm-up

  • 2-Back to 4-Back: The sweet spot for daily working memory training

  • 5-Back to 8-Back: Extreme memory mode - only for trained brains

Training Benefits

  • Working Memory: Strengthen your brain's short-term storage and processing

  • Focus: Rapid changes force sustained attention and reduce distraction

  • Cognitive Flexibility: High difficulty levels train fast mental switching

  • Brain Health: Supports neuroplasticity and helps slow age-related memory decline

Tips for Better Scores

  • Use verbal rehearsal - quietly name each image as it appears

  • Keep a mental "rolling queue" of the last N images

  • Start at 1-back or 2-back and only move up when you score 15+

  • Train 5-10 minutes daily rather than one long session
