What Is Huarong Dao?

Huarong Dao (华容道) is one of the oldest known sliding-block puzzles, from China: a board holds the warlord Cao Cao as a large 2×2 block, a ring of generals as 1×2 and 2×1 blocks, and soldiers as 1×1 squares — and you must slide them, without lifting or rotating any block, until Cao Cao escapes through the opening at the bottom. It is a legendary test of spatial planning, free in your browser.

How to Play Huarong Dao

  1. Read the board. Cao Cao is the large 2×2 block; the generals are the long 1×2 / 2×1 blocks; the soldiers are the small 1×1 squares.
  2. Drag any block to slide it. Blocks move only horizontally or vertically, into an empty space — they can never rotate or overlap.
  3. Open a path to the exit. The puzzle is solved when Cao Cao slides down through the opening at the bottom of the board.

Huarong Dao Pieces & Layouts

PieceShapeRole
Cao Cao (曹操)2×2Must escape through the bottom exit
Generals (关羽 张飞 赵云 马超 黄忠)1×2 or 2×1Blocking blocks to route around
Soldiers (兵)1×1Small fillers — key to opening gaps

Strategy Tips

  • Create open space near Cao Cao. Every slide needs an empty cell, so the first task is clearing room around the big block so it can begin its journey.
  • Use soldiers as moving gaps. The 1×1 soldiers are the only truly flexible pieces — park them wherever you need a slot, then move them out when a bigger block must pass.
  • Plan several moves ahead. Like chess, each slide closes one option and opens another; if stuck, trace Cao Cao's exit path backwards to see which blocking piece must move first.
