What Is the Slide Puzzle?
The Slide Puzzle — best known in its 4×4 form as the 15-puzzle — is a timeless sliding-block classic: numbered tiles sit on a grid with one empty space, and you slide tiles into the gap until the numbers run in order. It looks simple and is famously tricky, and here you can play it in sizes from a quick 3×3 up to a marathon 9×9, free in your browser.
How to Play the Slide Puzzle
- Read the scrambled board. The tiles are shuffled out of order, and exactly one square is empty — that empty space is your only room to move.
- Slide a neighbouring tile into the gap. Tap any tile that touches the empty space (horizontally or vertically) to move it over.
- Arrange tiles 1 to N²−1 in order. Work left to right, top to bottom, so the numbers climb in sequence.
- Finish with the gap in the bottom-right. The puzzle is solved when the last tile is in place and the empty space rests at the bottom-right corner.

Strategy Tips
- Solve row by row, from the top. Fix the first row completely, then the second — never scatter your attention across the whole board at once.
- Leave the bottom-right for last. The final 2×2 area is the traditional parking zone where the last three tiles are cycled into place.
- Start small to learn the technique. Master the 3×3 and 4×4 before scaling up; the row-by-row method is identical on every size, just longer.
- Minimise your move count. Fewer moves means a cleaner solve and a better score, so avoid sliding tiles back and forth.
