What Is Tic Tac Toe?

Tic Tac Toe (also called Noughts and Crosses) is the world's best-known three-in-a-row game: two players take turns marking a 3×3 grid, and the first to line up three of their marks — horizontally, vertically or diagonally — wins. With perfect play it always ends in a draw, but that simplicity is exactly why it is the classic warm-up for learning strategy, free in your browser.

How to Play Tic Tac Toe

  1. Take turns placing your mark. One player is X, the other O; players alternate putting a mark in any empty cell.
  2. Aim for three in a row. Three of your marks in a horizontal, vertical or diagonal line wins the game.
  3. Block your opponent. Whenever the other player has two in a line with an open third, that third cell is a must-block.
  4. Settle for a draw when both play well. Two perfect players always draw — the game's real skill is capitalising on an opponent's mistake.

Strategy Tips

  • Open in a corner. A corner opening gives your opponent the fewest safe replies and sets up the most potential winning lines.
  • Force a fork. A fork is two separate lines that each need one more mark — create one and the opponent cannot block both.
  • Answer the centre when you are second. If the first player takes the centre, reply in a corner; if they take a corner, take the centre to neutralise their advantage.

Tic Tac Toe FAQ

Is Tic Tac Toe free?

Yes — it is completely free on this site. No paywall, no download and no account; open the page and start playing.

Can two good players always draw?

Yes. With perfect play on both sides, Tic Tac Toe always ends in a draw. The game is won not by perfect play but by spotting and punishing the other player's mistake first.

Where should I place my first mark?

Opening in a corner is the strongest start — it creates the most possible winning lines and leaves your opponent the fewest good replies. Taking the centre is the safest response as second player.
