What Is the 24 Points Game?

The 24 points game is a classic mental-math puzzle: you are dealt four numbers, and the challenge is to combine all of them — using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, plus parentheses — into an expression that equals exactly 24. It is a favourite of classrooms and quick-fire puzzle lovers alike, and here you can play round after round free in your browser.

How to Play 24 Points

  1. Look at your four numbers. Each round gives you four whole numbers — for example 4, 6, 8 and 2.

  2. Combine them into an expression. Use each number exactly once, joined by +, −, × and ÷, with parentheses to control the order of operations.

  3. Make the expression equal 24. A solution might be (6 − 2) × 4 + 8, which works out to 16 + 8 = 24.

  4. Keep solving. When a round stumps you, use the Hint to see one possible solution, then carry on to the next set of numbers.

Scoring Rules

  • Scoring: every equation you complete adds +1 point. Wrong combinations cost nothing — the sticks simply bounce back, so undo and retry freely.
  • Time limit: choose 5, 10, 20 or 30 minutes before you start; the countdown runs continuously and pauses never restore lost time.
  • Automatic submission: when the timer hits zero, your final score is submitted to the leaderboard automatically. You need to be logged in — if you are not, a login window pops up first and the submission continues once you sign in.
  • Per-limit best: your best result is saved separately for each time limit (5 / 10 / 20 / 30 min), and the results panel flags a new personal record the moment you set one.

Strategy Tips

  • Hunt for factor pairs of 24. Because 24 = 3×8 = 4×6 = 12×2, most solutions build one of those pairs and use the other two numbers to manufacture it.

  • Try subtraction to create the pair. If your numbers are 6, 2, 4 and 8, note that 6 − 2 = 4 lets you reach 4 × (something) — and 4 × 6 = 24 completes it.

  • Work backwards from 24. Ask "what times or plus what gives 24?", then check whether your four numbers can produce those ingredients. Backward reasoning is usually faster than blind combining.
