Number Sequence Puzzle - Find the Pattern Math Brain Game Online
What Is the Number Sequence Puzzle?
The Number Sequence Puzzle is a pattern-recognition challenge: you are shown a series of numbers that follow a hidden rule, and your task is to figure out the pattern and enter the next number in the sequence. It ranges from simple arithmetic to genuine IQ-test difficulty, and you get unlimited attempts to find each answer — free in your browser.
How to Play the Number Sequence Puzzle
- Study the given numbers. Read the whole sequence before jumping to a guess.
- Identify the underlying rule. The numbers could be adding, multiplying, alternating, or following squares, cubes or primes.
- Enter the next number. Type the value that continues the pattern and submit.
- Try again as needed. You have unlimited attempts, so test different rules until one clicks.
Common Pattern Types
| Pattern | Example |
|---|---|
| Arithmetic | 2, 5, 8, 11, … (add 3) |
| Geometric | 3, 6, 12, 24, … (multiply by 2) |
| Fibonacci-like | 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, … (sum of previous two) |
| Alternating | Two rules applied to odd and even positions |
| Squares / cubes | 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, … (n²) |
| Primes | 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, … |
Game Modes
The game offers two ways to play, chosen before every round:
- Rank Mode — a 20-minute timed challenge. Every puzzle you solve adds one to your Solved count, and when the clock runs out your best result is submitted to the leaderboard. Longer sessions on harder difficulties produce higher scores.
- Normal Mode — untimed practice. Play as long as you like, restart whenever you want, and no score is submitted. Ideal for learning the common pattern types first.
Before starting you also pick a difficulty: Easy (simple arithmetic with small numbers), Medium (multi-step rules and mixed operations) or Hard (squares, cubes, factorials and alternating rules). Each difficulty contains 20 hand-picked sequences.
Scoring Rules
- Each correctly solved sequence awards 10 points in Normal Mode.
- A wrong answer deducts 2 points (your score never drops below zero).
- In Rank Mode your leaderboard value is the number of puzzles solved within the 20-minute window — each solved puzzle counts as one, regardless of difficulty.
- Leaderboards are kept per difficulty (Easy, Medium, Hard), so you compete only against players on the same level.
- Higher difficulty means longer sequences and more complex rules, so Hard boards reward both speed and accuracy.
- Using the hint does not lower your score, but it counts toward your 60-second hint cooldown.
- At the end of a Rank session you may submit your score once; only your personal best on each difficulty is kept.
Play consistently, avoid guessing, and climb the leaderboard one pattern at a time.
Strategy Tips
- Take differences first. Subtracting consecutive terms often exposes the rule at once — a sequence of differences that changes steadily is usually the key.
- Try ratios when differences fail. If subtracting reveals nothing, divide: a constant ratio points to a geometric sequence.
- Consider alternating rules. When a sequence seems to zig-zag, split it into odd-position and even-position sub-sequences — each may follow its own simple rule.
Number Sequence FAQ
Is the Number Sequence Puzzle free?
Yes — it is completely free on this site. No paywall, no download and no account; open the page and start pattern-hunting.
How many attempts do I get?
Unlimited. The puzzle lets you keep testing different rules until you find the right one, so there is no penalty for a wrong guess.
What difficulty levels are there?
Easy uses simple arithmetic patterns with small numbers; Medium adds multi-step rules; Hard throws in combined operations, squares and alternating rules — the kind that appear on real IQ tests.
